First Manhattan Co. is seeking an assistant for one of its Portfolio Management teams, which oversees more than $2.5B in managed high-net-worth client accounts. The candidate should have a broad level of experience in portfolio management administration, reviewing accounts and interfacing with clients, and possess a keen interest in investing in securities. This individual will work closely with a Portfolio Manager, a Relationship Manager, and the team’s other Portfolio Manager Associates.

Job responsibilities include:

  • High-touch client service, establishing new accounts, and interfacing regularly with shared services teams (Trading, Client Services, Operations, and Compliance).
  • Familiarity with all aspects of client administration. (Opening new accounts and processing client requests is important in this role).
  • Facility with technology, including using a PMS, and strong Microsoft Excel skills are required.
  • Must have a demonstrated ability as an effective executive assistant and be organized and productive, work well with other team members and shared services teams, be proactive, and take ownership of areas of responsibility.
  • Must have Series 7 and Series 63 licenses.
  • Must have 5+ years of relevant experience working as a Portfolio Manager Associate for one Portfolio Manager, similar to the job description being offered here.

This role operates as part of a larger team of eight, including two Portfolio Managers, two Relationship Managers, a dedicated Research Analyst, and three Portfolio Manager Associates. True intellectual curiosity paired with a “roll-up-your-sleeves” attitude is critical in this role.


  • Strong client skills required, including frequent phone and in-person client interactions
  • Candidate will support one Portfolio Manager and Relationship Manager and share administrative functions with the other PM Associates on the larger team
  • Foster client relations by prompt attention-to-service requests from existing clients, e.g., distribution requests, name changes, address changes, etc.
  • Prepare client reporting on an ongoing basis


  • Minimum 5–10 years of experience as a Portfolio Associate in related asset or investment firm, e.g., JP Morgan, US Trust, Citi Private Bank, etc.
  • Strong problem solver able to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner with minimal direction.
  • Able to raise problems quickly or admit errors and resolve quickly if needed.
  • Able to prioritize and plan work activities and change plans as a client's needs dictate.
  • Proficient in MS Word and Excel. Ability to learn new software systems required.
  • Strong organizational skills required, with ability to work with teams broadly across the firm.
  • Detail-oriented; Must be able to multi-task well and operate across different departments internally.
  • Must be an independent thinker, take initiative, and have self-confidence.
  • The right candidate will have excellent people skills and enjoy client relationships.
  • Experience with Pershing LLC a plus.


40 hours per week, with overtime as needed
